How the dog age calculation works
The size-adjusted method (used above)
Veterinary guidance from the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Kennel Club replaced the flat "one dog year equals seven human years" idea years ago. Puppies grow up quickly, so a one-year-old dog is closer to a 15-year-old human than a 7-year-old. After that, smaller dogs tend to live longer and age more gently, while giant breeds age the fastest. That is why this calculator asks for size.
The epigenetic clock (the science view)
In 2020, researchers at the University of California San Diego published a formula in the journal Cell Systems based on chemical changes to DNA (methylation) in Labrador Retrievers. It estimates human age as 16 times the natural logarithm of the dog's age, plus 31. It lines up well for dogs past their first year and is shown above as a second estimate. Because it was built mainly from Labradors, treat it as a guide rather than a breed-exact number.
When is a dog a senior?
Life stage depends on size more than on a single age. As a rough guide, small dogs are often considered senior around 11 to 12 years, medium dogs around 9 to 10, large dogs around 7 to 8, and giant breeds as early as 6. Knowing your dog's stage helps with diet, exercise, and vet checkups, and it is a gentle reminder to make the most of every year together.

Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. That rule of thumb is not accurate. Dogs mature much faster early on and then age at a rate that depends on their size, which is what this calculator reflects.
How old is a 1-year-old dog in human years?
About 15 human years for most dogs, regardless of size. The big differences between small and giant breeds show up later in life.
Why does size change the result?
Larger dogs have shorter average lifespans and age faster once fully grown. A 10-year-old small dog is roughly 56 in human years, while a giant breed of the same age is closer to 80.
